Blogging about the Minnesota Vikings could be a task to fill this blog on a daily basis, but I’ll reserve that right and privilege to the professionals like Mr. Cheer or Die and Vikes Geek. They’re undoubtedly well connected and breath the air that is Minnesota Vikings football regularly. Yet, here I am with a missive about the Vikings, in particular, the running backs.
I have no idea if the current contingent of running backs found on the Minnesota Vikings Wikipedia page will open the season on the roster, but I find myself wondering about that crew this morning.
- Ciatrick Fason, RB
- Joey Goodspeed, FB
- Mewelde Moore, RB
- Tony Richardson, FB
- Chester Taylor, RB
- Joe Echema, RB
- Taurean Henderson, RB
- Steven Jackson, FB
Granted, some of these fellows are fullbacks…but I’m curious if the organization is content with Fason, Moore, Taylor and even this Henderson character to go the course of the season. I kinda wonder if the Vikings will be scoping the waiver wire for June 1 cuts (I think that’s the date when teams slice and dice their roster for salary cap reasons.).
Which brings me to Travis Henry of the Titans. He’ll be coming off a pretty cruddy season and with the addition of LenDale White to the team, I suspect he’ll be fodder for the veteran cut period. Henry, White and Chris Brown sounds like an awfully crowded backfield. A bunch of talent. Too much to keep on one team if you ask me. Then there are egos and wanting to be “the man” when it comes to carrying the ball. I bet he’ll be with a new team this season.
The question now is two-fold. Will the Vikings be looking to add another ball carrier for the season? And secondly, is Travis Henry the type of player that would fit into the offense that Coach Childress is constructing?
He might be a good fit, or not. I don’t know. Just thinking out loud.
I don’t think the Vikings need to go after another running back. Chester Taylor would have started for several teams last season, and I think he will be the starter this season in Minnesota. Moore is serviceable and is able to make plays. I also think that Taurean Henderson will surprise you. Watch out for him!

DR U:
Chester may well have started for some teams, but only time will tell if he’s “the man” for carrying the ball on a regular basis. Taylor has played in 62 games in 4 seasons, but that has been at the expense of Lewis doing the heavy lifting. I’m not sure he can do that same heavy lifting for the Vikings for the entire season. I have a love/hate feeling with Moore. When he plays healthy, I think he can be a very effective, elusive runner. Is he a #1? Not sure. I like what he can do, but can he do it all the time? He and Taylor may be effective as a tandem combination this season.
The reason I entertained the idea of the Vikes looking to add another person is that nobody on the team has been a #1 running back on any NFL team for any length of time.
When Henry has been healthy, he has shown that he can run the ball and run it well. I’d be intrigued about adding him to the stable if he were available and let him compete for playing time with the others.
Taurean Henderson will for sure surprise everyone. He is awesome and will be very realiable!!!!
Taurean Henderson is a for sure victor, he will come out strong of the gate! Reminding everyone his ability to skate fast for thirty to fourty yards easily! Good luck!
I know Taurean Henderson well. He will not only surprise you but, he will astonish you as well. I have watch him develope into the back he is and believe the sky is the limit for this young man. Minnesota has really received a gift in nabbing him. He will produce numbers.
Hey Archie, remember me from Gatesville? I agree Taurean is the real deal, he is your half brother isn’t he?
Henderson is the real deal. There’s a reason he ran for 50 TDs and caught 16 more (in the Big 12 South, no less)–and he can pick up the blitz as well as any small back in the draft. Here’s what wikki has to say: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taurean_Henderson
Man can you believe that the Vikings cut him?
The Vikings screwed up in letting Henderson go. Taurean will break in to the NFl one day and I hope he comes back to haunt Minnesota for letting him go. Dumb Move!
