Hey did you go to the lost 40. I am going there this week with friends from Kansas, I have been there before and it is as you are saying fantastic and wonderful. I didn’t end up getting there this year. As a family, we were pretty busy early in the summer. Plus, over the last month or so, my wife hasn’t been feeling all that great. Being pregnant did a number on her once again…I still hope to get there next year — with three kids under five! Ambitious, but I think it’ll be fun.
I am going up there this weekend from Chicago. I used to live in Bigfork and this is truly a very special place. I’ve hiked in in snowshoes in thigh deep drifts and during summers in shorts. You get the same feeling whenever you get under amongst those aged pines…these are sentinels of the living history of our space on this planet.
I’m taking a young lady who lives in Grand Rapids there for her first time. It will be fun to see her reaction. It’s hard to believe but it seems like most of the people I know in that area have never been there. Amazing.
I hope you get there soon and I highly recommend a winter tromp in. The contrast of these huge dark monsters against new snow and etheral light is the best.
where do you stay?
Stay in Marcell at the Timberwolf Inn. Nice affordable place with a restaurant and bar. It is right on Highway 38 about 10 miles south of Bigfork. Stop in at the US Forest Service ranger station (on 38 as well) in Marcell to get a map and directions to Lost Forty.

I just heard about the lost 40 recently. As we were cruising this north county by motocycle on our way home from Grand Rapids one of the fellows saw the forestry sign for this neat place. We did not stop but all have plans to go back. Bob, Warren, MN
