A lone decorated headstone stands beside 5,076 other headstones containing the remains of American World War II military veterans at the American Military Cemetery in Luxembourg. The site was liberated by the U.S. 5th Armored Division on Sept. 10, 1944, and a temporary military burial ground was initially established on Dec. 10, 1944. I have no clue why this popped into my head this morning, but I had the urge to read up on some World War II history. I ended my web meanderings at the U.S. Department of Defense’s Battle of the Bulge, 60th Anniversary Special.
I wandered through the photo essay. I did a little reading and watched the slideshow. Amazing stuff (those Combat Camera photographers did one heck of a job). It’s always good to reaffirm what I already knew and take pause to reflect upon the history and sacrifices made on behalf of all. 60 years since the Battle of the Bulge seems like forever, but to those World War II vets it must seem like it was yesterday.
What a period in history. Thank you.
